SOS from Texas is one company that embodies all the goodness of ethical, earth-friendly and quality conscious home-based business. We are so proud to work with this company and showcase their organic collection on OrganicEcho. This post is to share, appreciate and support ‘SOS fom Texas’ in their continuous earth-friendly business practices.
SOS t-shirts are made from organic cotton grown on their certified organic farms. They have been certified “Organic” by the Texas Department of Agriculture since 1992. This certification information is provided with their products to show their authenticity. These days, often we find organic products in the market with very vague organic credentials. Not many consumers know that U.S. Organic Standards requires a 3 year chemical free farming period before a company can be allowed to be certified “Organic”. It is imperative that effort is made to promote and differentiate the genuine “Organically Certified” companies from the fake imposters!
THE ORGANIC JOURNEY….
SOS cotton is planted in mid-May and harvested after frost in November. The harvested cotton is ginned at their certified Organic gin and then shipped to a certified mill in North Carolina for spinning into yarn. The yarn is also knitted, finished and sewn in the Carolinas. SOS products have a pedigree as they can tell you when and where they were planted and can also trace the stages of their development into a finished product.
SOS organic cotton products are 100% Made in the USA, “sweat shop free”, by American workers being paid a fair and lawful wage. These standards do not allow for a “cheap” organic t-shirt, but a product with a very high value and quality that the customers can be proud to wear for many years.
SOS organic cotton is “good for man and good for the land” as their Eco-friendly practices improve our environment, create jobs for people in rural America and keep our family farm and heritage sustainable. SOS organic cotton products are truly unique and allow the consumers to become a part of the fascinating organic journey that started with the organically nurtured cotton seed!
Not many companies can boast of such a transparent, green & quality manufacturing process. OrganicEcho is totally in love with this family-owned Organic Company… Check out the video included in this post to see in detail how a cotton seed finally gets transformed into a lovely Organic cotton Tee!

Recently on Feb. 9 and 10, CBS Evening News with Katie Couric aired a segment on livestock production that indicated significant use of antibiotics for non-therapeutic use. Respected organizations such as the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization have recommended against the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in agriculture in order to protect public health. Those organizations point out that such uses of antibiotics in agriculture contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.
Choosing foods bearing the organic label is the only way consumers can be sure meats and dairy products they buy have been produced without the use of antibiotics, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA) in response to this news segment. You can read the complete response from OTA here.
Suit seeks to bar genetically modified sugar beets
PHILOMATH, Ore. — Organic farmers fear this year’s spring breezes will be carrying pollen from genetically altered sugar beets, which they say could render their crops worthless, and they hope to persuade a federal judge this week to halt the plantings nationwide.
Experts and industry groups say such an injunction could jeopardize U.S. sugar supplies, about half of which comes from the biotech beets planted on more than 1 million acres in 10 states stretching from Michigan to Oregon.
“It will be a big problem,” if the injunction is granted, said Carol Mallory-Smith, professor of weed science at Oregon State University. “The industry really had converted to this.”
The beets, engineered to be resistant to Monsanto’s popular herbicide Roundup, comprise 95 percent of the crop after two seasons of planting. All the seed comes from Oregon’s Willamette Valley.
Organic farmers, food safety advocates and conservation groups already have won a lawsuit forcing federal authorities to reconsider their 2005 approval of the Roundup Ready beets for unrestricted use, saying the government failed to take a hard look at cross-pollination risks. Please read the complete story here.

Did you know Bamboo is botanically categorized as a grass (not a tree) and is the fastest-growing plant on Earth. It has been measured to grow as fast as 121 cm (48 in) in a 24-hour period, growing up to 4 feet in a single day having an extensive root structure that grows an average of 4 to 6 new shoots each year.
Historically, bamboo was famous for its use as a construction material but what has really made it newsworthy lately is its rise to fame as an eco-friendly textile fiber. With increasing focus on living natural and avoiding chemicals laden products, bamboo has caught fancy of quite a few designers and manufacturers to create earth friendly products. This article will explore the benefits of using bamboo fiber in textiles and understand what makes this fiber so popular as a ‘green’ fabric.
With the advent of recent technologies, cellulose processed from bamboo can be successfully spun into viscose yarn. Modern bamboo yarn is therefore a regenerated cellulose fiber. In simple words, bamboo fiber is made by pulping the grass till it separates into thin threads of fiber, which is then spun for weaving it into cloth. The so called ‘bamboo clothing’ is thus clothing made from either 100% bamboo yarn or a blend of bamboo with other textile fibers such as cotton, hemp or even spandex. Most of the bamboo used to make bamboo fiber and bamboo clothing is grown in China by Hebei Jigao Chemical Fiber Company. This company holds the patent on the process for turning bamboo into fiber.
It is interesting to note that bamboo fiber closely resembles cotton in its un-spun form, looking like a a puffball of light, airy fibers. But the unique structure of bamboo fibers make the bamboo fabric more breathable and thermal regulating than not only cotton but also hemp, wool or synthetic fabrics.
Silky and soft – Bamboo fabric is luxuriously soft, antistatic, smooth, soothing and comfortable apart from having a natural sheen that feels and drapes like silky cashmere. Only major difference being bamboo fabric is less costly and more durable than natural silk.
Naturally Organic – Bamboo plant is naturally pest resistant because of a natural anti-bacterial agent called “bamboo kun” bound to the plant’s cells. This makes bamboo cultivation 100% pesticide free. This is in contrast to conventional cotton which uses 25% of all the world’s pesticides. In addition, this fast growing plant is grown fertilizer free and is harvested without any chemicals (no bleach or chlorine is used). Also, there are eco-certifications available such as ‘Oeko-Tex’ which have strict guidelines in place to insure that the manufacturing and finishing processes are also chemical free and healthy.
Sustainable – Bamboo is a grass, so once cut it regenerates quickly without the need for replanting (just like our garden lawn). Bamboo shoots continuously come out from its vast root network and grow very densely converting the land again into a new green patch giving a much higher yield-per-acre in comparison to cotton. What makes it even more exciting is the fact that this achieved without the use of any harmful chemicals or environment polluting modern machinery. Bamboo plantations require very little maintenance because bamboo plant requires very little water and can survive drought conditions as well as flooding. It takes much less energy to grow and sustain bamboo than other similar trees and plants used for fiber production.
Breathable – Bamboo textiles have micro gaps and holes that breathe easily and seldom stick to the skin in hot weather. Bamboo fiber clothing is often worn next to the skin due to its coolness and excellent wicking ability (3 to 4 times that of cotton) that channels moisture away so that it can evaporate.
UV Protection – Bamboo clothing can also function as sun block and is known to block out 98 percent of UV activity. A 100% bamboo fabric has an SPF of 14. The production of negative ion, effectively resists radiation from ultraviolet radiation without any stimulation.
Eco-friendly – Bamboo gives us clean air to breathe as bamboo plants absorb about 5 times the amount of carbon dioxide and produce about 35% more oxygen than other comparable trees. More bamboo would surely help the fight against global warming. Some varieties of bamboo sequester up to 12 tons of carbon dioxide from the air per hectare. Bamboo has a natural high growth rate thus it does not need use of any insecticides or pesticides. This reduces the use of modern agricultural machinery in turn saving fuel and reducing air pollution. In addition, bamboo can be easily intercropped with vegetables which helps in restoring degraded lands, stabilizing soil and protecting against soil erosion.
Absorbent & Breathable – Bamboo is known to absorb up to 60% more water than cotton. This makes it an excellent choice for clothing, towels and bathrobes. The porous nature of the fiber makes it breathable and extremely comfortable against the skin. Small and large size elliptic openings exist in cross sections of bamboo fiber and they can absorb and release a great deal of water instantly. Water absorption of bamboo is two times higher than conventional cotton. Moisture absorption, moisture releasing and permeability of bamboo fiber are in fact highest among all fibers.
Thermo-regulating – Bamboo fabric keeps the wearer warm in cool weather. Bamboo is highly absorbent and takes water away from the body 3 to 4 times faster than cotton. In warm, humid and sweaty weather, bamboo clothing helps keep the wearer drier, cooler and more comfortable and doesn’t stick to the skin.
Reclaims land – Yearly replanting of crops such as cotton leads to soil erosion. Since the extensive root system of bamboo is not disturbed during harvesting, bamboo tends to preserve soil. The bamboo plants root system creates an effective watershed, holding the soil together along river banks and deforested areas thus also effectively reducing soil erosion. Because of its rapid growth, ability to support crop-rotation and root structure, bamboo is known to quickly reclaim waste land and clean the soil of toxins.
Hypoallergenic – Bamboo fiber is naturally round with no sharp edges to irritate the skin. This makes bamboo clothing soft and non-irritating, even to people with highly sensitive skin. In fact, many people who have eczema and allergic reactions to other natural fibers ( wool / hemp ) show no sign of any irritation with bamboo fiber.
Naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal – supposedly because of a bacterial agent unique to bamboo plants called ‘bamboo kun’ which also helps bamboo resist harboring odors. ‘Kun’ is also sometimes spelled “kunh”. The bamboo kun in bamboo fabric stops odor-producing bacteria from growing and spreading in the bamboo cloth allowing bamboo clothing to be more hygienic and to remain fresher smelling.
Easy and low maintenance – Bamboo clothing is easy to launder in a clothes washer and dryer. Bamboo clothing is naturally more wrinkle-resistant than cotton, and while it might still require ironing after washing, bamboo fabric can be ironed at a lower temperature than cotton. Shrinkage during washing and drying is minimal at warm temperatures.
Biodegradable - Bamboo clothing (both mechanically and chemically manufactured) is 100% biodegradable and can be completely decomposed in the soil by micro-organisms and sunlight without decomposing into any pollutants such as methane gas which is commonly produced as a by-product of decomposition in landfills and dumps.
With such a long list of benefits, bamboo is arguably a great eco-friendly fiber. It works wonderfully with sensitive skin, is delicate and soft for babies & kids and is an extremely comfortable wear for all seasons. We truly hope to see much more acceptability of this amazing eco-friendly fiber and look forward to many more designers coming forward to create fashionable options with this fabric.
As per Wikipedia, Organic movement broadly refers to the organizations and individuals involved worldwide in the promotion of sustainable agriculture and organic farming, and a general opposition to agribusiness. Its history goes back to the first half of the 20th century, when modern large-scale agricultural practices began to appear.
Even though the termOrganic has become fashionable recently, in reality organic farming happens to be the most ancient form of farming. Farmers had no petroleum based chemicals and instead used techniques such as crop rotation and biodiversity to maintain the soil nutrient-rich and free from erosion.
With the dawn of 20th century food was no longer grown, instead it started getting manufactured.
Farming saw introduction of mechanical farming tools such as the tractor, popularization of nitrogen fertilizer, and larger fields that focused on growing one or two crops versus a variety of crops.
Post World-War II, agriculture industry saw many technological innovations such as large-scale irrigation, fertilization, and the use of pesticides. Ammonium nitrate, used in munitions, became an abundantly cheap source of nitrogen. DDT, originally developed by the military to control disease-carrying insects among troops, was applied to crops, launching the era of widespread pesticide use.
But soon industrialization started making a negative mark on the way farming was being done in this new era. To counter this effect of chemicals laden farming techniques, Organic Movement slowly began to emerge in England. This movement has survived many challenges and has become stronger than ever in the 21st century.
Since 1990, the market for organic products has grown at a rapid pace, to reach $46 billion in 2007. This demand has driven a similar increase in organically managed farmland. Approximately 32.2 million hectares worldwide are now farmed organically, representing approximately 0.8 percent of total world farmland. In addition, as of 2007 organic wild products are harvested on approximately 30 million hectares.
Organic agricultural methods are internationally regulated and legally enforced by many nations, based in large part on the standards set by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), an international umbrella organization for organic organizations established in 1972
IFOAM s most recent edition of The World of Organic Agriculture: Statistics and Emerging Trends 2009 lists the countries which had the most hectares in 2007. The country with the most organic land is Australia with more than 12 million hectares, followed by Argentina, Brazil and the US. In total 32.2 million hectares were under organic management in 2007. For 1999 11 million hectares of organically managed land are reported.
Some interesting facts and timelines for the Organic Movement
1930- 1950
The term “organic farming” was first used by Lord Northbourne (aka Walter James, 4th Baron Northbourne). He thought of farm as an organism and the term organic farming; was inspired by this concept. He described this concept in detail in his book, Look to the Land (1940). In this book he described a holistic and ecologically balanced approach to farming. Northbourne discussed the topic of “chemical farming versus organic farming” in great detail.
Sir Albert Howard is often referred as the father of modern organic agriculture . His writings, and notably, the 1940 book, An Agricultural Testament, influenced many scientists and farmers of the day and is a classic organic farming text.
Sir Albert Howard (1873-1947) was a British botanist, an organic farming pioneer, and a principal figure in the early organic movement. He worked in India as agricultural advisor, where he observed and came to support traditional Indian farming practices over conventional agricultural science. He went on to document and develop organic farming techniques, and spread his knowledge through the UK-based Soil Association, and the Rodale Institute in the US.
In 1939, strongly influenced by Sir Howard s work, Lady Eve Balfour launched the Haughley Experiment on farmland in England. It was the first scientific, side-by-side comparison of organic and conventional farming. Four years later, she published The Living Soil, based on the initial findings of the Haughley Experiment. It was widely read, and lead to the formation of a key international organic advocacy group, the Soil Association
In 1944, an international campaign called the Green Revolution was launched in Mexico with private funding from the US. It encouraged the development of hybrid plants, chemical controls, large-scale irrigation, and heavy mechanization in agriculture around the world.
1951- 1980
During the 1950s, sustainable agriculture was a research topic of interest, but science tended to concentrate on the new chemical approaches. In the U.S., J.I. Rodale began to popularize the term and methods of organic growing. In addition to agricultural research, Rodale s publications through the Rodale Press helped to promote organic gardening to the general public.
In 1962, Rachel Carson, a prominent scientist and naturalist, published Silent Spring, chronicling the effects of DDT and other pesticides on the environment. A bestseller in many countries, including the US, and widely read around the world, Silent Spring was instrumental in the US government s 1972 banning of DDT. The book and its author are often credited with launching the environmental movement.
In the 1970s, worldwide movements concerned with the pollution and the environment increased attention on organic farming. As the distinction between organic and conventional food became clear, one goal of the organic movement was to encourage consumption of locally grown food, which was promoted through slogans such as “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food”.
1981 – 2000
In the 1980s, around the world, various farming and consumer groups began seriously pressuring for government regulation of organic production. This led to various legislation and certification standards being enacted through the
1990s and to date. Currently, most aspects of organic food production are government-regulated in the US and the European Union.
21st Century
In the 2000s, the worldwide market for organic products including food, beauty, health, body-care, and household products, and fabrics has grown rapidly.
More countries are establishing formal, government-regulated certification of organic food.
(In 2002 in the US, in 2005 in China http://eprints.utas.edu.au/895/ and projected for 2006 in Canada, among others)
Monitoring and challenging certification rules and decisions have become a regular, high profile aspect of activists in the organic movement.
In March 2002, IFOAM obtained observer status with UNCTAD, and in addition received classification in a special category to participate in the meetings of the Commission on Trade on Goods and Services and Commodities, the Commission on Enterprise, Business Facilitation and Development and the meetings of the UNCTAD Board.
As of today, organic movement has become a profitable industry with major manufacturers showcasing their green efforts. With all this popularity comes the price. There are many who have started to believe that if regulations are not properly implemented and consumers are not proactively vigilant, people will be mislead into buying non-organic products.
The words ‘Eco-friendly’, ‘organic’ and natural’ are becoming a staple part of media coverage. They have become so popular that every other company these days is busy redefining their marketing campaign to highlight their environment friendly initiatives. Consumers are increasingly asking for organic alternatives and are willing to pay a premium price for the same. But, in spite of all the media attention there are many who are either unaware of this ‘organic trend’ or are skeptical about any real benefits from these so called fancy ‘organic products’
This article is dedicated to all the skeptics who are trying to decide if this ‘go green’ and ‘buy organic cotton mantra just a marketing drama, a status symbol fad or genuinely a better and safe choice of products especially for our young kids.
Mentioned below are some facts that will tilt your decision towards purchasing organic cotton products and living an environment friendly lifestyle…
Worldwide, cotton is known to be a pesticide-heavy crop. It uses approximately 25 percent of the world’s insecticides and 10 percent of the world’s pesticides. Considering that our skin absorbs chemicals through the clothes we wear (especially the baby skin), products made of regular grown cotton can cause serious damage to our health
There are approximately 12.8 million acres of conventional cotton grown in the United States with about four pounds of cotton produced per acre. To improve productivity about fifty-five million pounds of pesticides gets sprayed on these 12.8 million acres. This makes cotton ranked third just behind corn and soybeans in pesticide dependence.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers seven of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton in the United States as “possible,” “likely,” “probable,” or “known” to cause cancer in humans. Considering the tender skin of infants and babies, regular grown, pesticide heavy cotton should be definitely avoided.
The World Health Organization estimates that pesticides poison at least three million people every year, with 200,000 people dying from pesticide poisoning annually. By making a choice to buy organic cotton, we will support the organic farming methods which do not involve use of pesticides or any other chemicals. This will also have a positive impact on the health of farmers.
The United States Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry reports that children exposed to methyl parathion, an insecticide, suffer memory loss and emotional swings. It is thus recommended to go for organic and eco-friendly cleaning supplies especially to keep our children safe.
A University of Florida study conducted in Mexico found that adverse results from pesticide exposure can cross generations. In findings published in Environmental Health Perspectives, Elizabeth A. Guillette and colleagues found that the daughters of mothers who lived near areas of heavy agricultural spraying may be unable to nurse their children. Sonoran Mayan girls whose mothers were exposed to chemical spraying did not develop mammary tissue necessary to produce milk, unlike their counterparts whose mothers were not exposed to such chemicals.
A recent study of 600 people found that those exposed to pesticides had a 1.6 times greater risk of developing Parkinsons disease than those who were not. Those who made heavy use of pesticides, or who were exposed to them more than 200 days in the course of their lifetime, were found to have over twice the level of risk, suggesting that there is very strong evidence linking pesticide use and Parkinsons disease, according to lead researcher Dana Hancock.
A National Cancer Institute researcher who matched pesticide data and medical records in 10 California agricultural counties reported that pregnant women living within nine miles of farms where pesticides are sprayed on fields may have increased risk of losing an unborn baby to birth defects.
Considering all the above mentioned facts and the effect the chemicals can have on our health, it is highly advisable to make more and more organic choices. We all need to bring environment back in our lifestyle starting from eating organic food, wearing clothes made of organic fabrics and living more in tune with nature.
In recent times, health and nutrition consciousness has become an integral part of our daily lives. Thus, it is not a surprise when reports indicate that the fruits and vegetables who were superstars in the ancient civilizations are back on their way to ‘health stardom’, in this modern era.
This newfound popularity is driven by the fact that fruits and veggies contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that may help protect us from chronic diseases. In comparison to people who consume a diet with only small amounts of fruits and vegetables, those who eat more generous amounts as part of their daily diet are likely to have reduced risk of chronic diseases like stroke and perhaps other cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers.
When buying these superstars, I highly recommend that you go for the colorful ones. And trust me, this recommendation is not driven by the fact that I love colorful things! It has already been proved that eating fruits and veggies of different colors gives our body a wide range of valuable nutrients, like fiber, folate, potassium, and vitamins A and C. What more can you ask from these little gifts of nature??
But before you get all excited on your trip to the produce market and stock your house with these colorful goodies, please read the below mentioned facts. Unfortunately, most of the produce available for purchase are loaded with harmful chemicals. And if you have been even remotely listening to what’s going on in our modern world, you would know that the biggest culprits are the ‘Pesticides’ used in the farming of crops.
Over the last 60 years farmers and growers have changed the way they produce food so as to meet the expectations of consumers and increase profitability in domestic and global markets. The major change seen in the modern farming practice often is the excessive use of pesticides.
Farmers use pesticides to:
protect crops from insect pests, weeds and fungal diseases while they are growing
prevent rats, mice, flies and other insects from contaminating foods whilst they are being stored
safeguard human health, by stopping food crops being contaminated by fungi
Incase you have not yet realized the situation, scientists estimate that 40 percent of all cancer incidence in men and 60 percent in women is related to diet. To paint a much clear picture of my concern, I have collected some facts on the amount of chemicals found in the common fruits and vegetable. This data is taken from www.whatsonmyfood.org. You can visit the website for more information and check the presence of chemicals found in the everyday food items.
In the below mentioned data , the numbers indicate the breakup of total chemicals found in the produce and their effects on human health.
